The Local Area
Walberswick
Walberswick is a peaceful fishing village just across the River Blyth from Southwold. A favourite with artists for its harbour and sea views and its quaint cottages, Walberswick also boasts one of the best sandy beaches in the area. There are two pubs which serve good food and a well-stocked village shop as well as several interesting gift shops.
There are many attractive walks on the doorstep: across the common to Southwold, along the beach to Dunwich and exploring the heathland and marshes behind Walberswick which are part of a nature reserve with much interesting birdlife.
Every summer, the British Open Crabbing Championship is held at Walberswick, a fun event for all the family which also raises funds for charity.
Southwold
This delightful and unspoilt Georgian seaside resort has all the ingredients for a relaxed family holiday – which is why generations of families keep coming back to Southwold. There is a safe sandy beach with colourful beachhuts and the new pier has tasteful amusements and a pleasant café/bar with wonderful sea views.
Southwold is also a traditional market town with many interesting and individual shops. There are numerous pubs serving good food to be washed down by the local Adnams beer including the Sole Bay Inn, the Nelson, the Red Lion and the King's Head. Down at the harbour, excellent fish and chips can be had at the Harbour Inn. There are several good restaurants including the Swan and The Crown.
The Electric Picture Palace shows an eclectic mix of films in a tiny period cinema and during the summer season the Southwold Summer Theatre puts on a varied repertoire of plays to suit all ages and tastes.
